The little lithium button battery keeps the time going and holds the
BIOS
settings in CMOS memory.
It generally doesn't cause any problems unless you need some kind of
special
settings in the BIOS.

The time drifting is annoying though. The are available from Maplin too -
make sure you get the right size - usually CR2032.
And before you ask, no I don't work for Mapin...
