Beyond the Manual
in case it helps someone else, too :
have just bought a copy of the book Beyond the Manual for Mac OS X
Leopard - seems pretty good & has been more than helpful already
(accessible but brief & to the point, pragmatic, covers customizing
&
admin', comms, applications (Apple) , Darwin, networking, development
& scripting, cross-platform stuff, etc) ...
they also do one for Vista, 'though not seen it ... no sign of one
for 'XP ...
