Okay I can see that it could be interpreted differently to what I
meant.

As most electricity is generated from coal, oil or gas and uses
steam to turn turbines and genrate the elctricity then it is around
33% efficient. The transfer of the electricty to homes will loose
more and finally the process of, using the elcetricity for the task
will also introduce inefficeiency.

I haven't seen any data but I can't help thinking that electric cars
are probably more polluting than using petrol directly due to the
inefficiencies of creating the electricity in the first place.
