Re: Fw: NAS recommendation needed

Slightly off-topic since it's a semi-anti-recommendation ...

When I bought it I was pretty sure the ReadyNAS was the best of the bunch.
I
like the ReadyNAS NV I have featurewise.

But my power supply has just (yesterday) got sick (making a very nasty
smell) and going online it looks like this not an uncommon story. It
remains
to be seen how easy it is to get a replacement power supply - reports are
that they are out of stock everywhere. At the moment I have a modified
desktop ATX supply running the box rather than wait for the supply to die
and then investigate whether it is still in warranty. The power supply is a
fairly cheesy one using the infamous fuhjyyu (pronounced F**k You)
capacitors. In fact, I wish I had realised I could probably wedge in a
decent quality server 1U power supply before I paid through the nose to
order the replacement.

There was a service action to help cool the unit which involved reversing
the fan - which I did. What they didn't warn about was how quickly the air
filter on the front would clog and impeded the flow - in fact it was only
online that I discovered the dust membrane could be removed.

My power supply overheated without any of the overheat alarms being
triggered because there is no heat sensor near the power supply and if the
disks are relatively inactive they don't warm up much.

I don't know whether the NV+ has fixed this problem, I have an NV rev B
with
the same fanless power supply that the NV+ initially shipped with.

Gareth - I highly recommend you regularly vac the dust filter, and if you
have a reversed fan (ie sucks in back, blows through the front) remove the
membrane in the front door, the aluminium grille actually pivots opens on
one side to let you pull it out.

Cheers

David
