That is what I've done. Rather than run CAT5 out there I use Homeplug AV
units to send the Ethernet down the Armoured Cable to the shed. Works
well. Easily fast enough for backups - at some point I'll try streaming
video.

The shed is waterproof and has some cavity insulation (it was going to
be
my workshop).

In the shed is an UPS (that covers the NSLU2 as they don't recover
"on"
should there be a power cut) and three USB housed HDDs fed from the
filtered UPS outputs. They are reasonably hidden out of sight and at
some
point I'll put mesh up around them. My main precaution was to get the
PSUs for the USB drives and suspend them from the shelf above the
hardware. The idea being that any wildlife that gets in and thinks that
is a
warm home can't make a nest there.

The shed is connected to the garage by about 15m of armoured cable. In
the garage (attached to the house but single skin brick on one side) I
have
a PC running Geovision CCTV software. This has been running nearly
continuously since mid 2004 on XP SP1 (as I can't get SP2 to work).
Standard tower case. Earlier this year the PSU fan started making
strange
noises so I replaced that.  As well as the local internal HDDs the
Geovision writes via a network share to another NSLU2 which is hidden
with a couple of USB drives on top of a kitchen wall unit that I have in
the
garage. When I get round to writing some scripts or software I aim to
have
something running in the Geovision machine to copy video files to the
shed
- only keeping the last 24 hours or so. Any idea for software scripts?
I'm
considering a never ending ROBOCOPY script and some tidy-up process.
It won't be every video feed so response times shouldn't be an issue.

Sometime I'll move the Garage ones to better hiding places and fix them
properly and increase the size.
