But like all things so simple it does not work! As soon as I punch down a
bit of wire (solid core) into connector 5 the phone does not work! It does
not have to be connected to anything just punched down..

I seem to remember I need to cut out the capacitor(?) SP1 out, is this
correct?

Capacitor should be cut out of all jacks other than the master/NTE5 but it
wont sop the phone from working.

Most likely the wire you are punching in is a larger diameter than the
existing wire and you are forcing the splines of the punchdown apart
slightly and losing the connection with the existing wire.

I assume you have checked that your new cable hasn't got snaged on
something
and is earthing the wire you are punching down.
