Sounds like "keep it simple for the masses" nonsense to me. 
My HTPC has
a fanless MSI Geforce 7300GS with DVI and HDMI outputs (and only £65
too!).  It doesn't quite have the power to do 1080p decoding in
hardware, but the CPU (Core2Duo 6400) can do it instead at only 30%
utilization.  I guess you might need to connect it to a monitor at
first, since the card doesn't list the HD resolutions by default (the
Nvidia drivers let you add your own custom one, though).

This means I can't play HDDVDs using the official "HDCP
compliant"
route, but then why the hell should I pay extra just to implement DRM
for someone else's benefit?

So instead I use AnyDVDHD to do on-the-fly decryption, or rip the disk
to the server hard drive for streaming instead.
