Re: pcb assembly

Hi

I believe Keith Doxey gets some mounting done these days. If I remember
correctly though this is quite an expensive option vs. DIY. I have looked
at the Olimex option before but my boards are complex and all SMT so I
didn't even get as far as a quote. I may have to revisit this some day
though.

Don't forget if your quote was from last year it may not include the 20%
VAT they now have to add. All part of being in the EU or something. I did
note the shipping cost was lower than last year which helped though.

How much of that was the assembly vs. the other costs like board production
and components?

If you do end up DIY don't forget that the holes will all be plated if it
is a double sided board (not sure about single sided) which means that more
heat is required to make the solder run quickly. I was caught by this a
long time ago and ended up getting a beefier iron. Of course, I am probably
trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs..............

Hi guys,

I know it's been discussed a few times here that Olimex is the place to
go to for prototype pcbs, but is there any advice here on pcb assembly
in small quantities?

Not looking for anything too large - 30 or 60 39mmx48mm pcbs stuffed
with 16 through hole components each - enough that I don't want to
solder them myself ;)

(Olimex will do this - they've quoted me in the region of 200-400ukp
including the PCBs and components - has anyone used them for this before?)

Thanks

Joseph
