Thank you for the suggestions. I had not realised some switches auto
detect and
adjust to whether they can 'see' a crossover cable or not. That
invalidated my
assumptions. Result, redid tests and swapped in a new 'definitely
crossover'
cable. Now its all working fine. Next step, off to shed to retrieve the
silicone gun. Thanks again guys.
BTW does anybody know how to reply to an append from a digest file without
alot
of messing around?
