Either that, or one of the cables you're using is a crossover cable.
Depending on the type of switch used for test #6, this could
"ignore"
the cross and work fine.

Re: the plastic bit broken off from the CM12 cable...is it an RJ11
plug, like a modem cable? You could try a dab of silicone sealer just
to hold it in place, or superglue, if you never want to take it apart.
