Re: [OT]ish Any ADSL MAx users on long-ish lines

Tim,

I've also got a Vigour 2600 router on a long line - 5.5km.
At the moment it's 58.5dB and SNR is 17.5 - that's the best I've seen it.
(normally see 60dB and 12.0 SNR)
Before we had the adsl line installed a BT engineer visited to test the
loop attenuation - it was 60.5dB and he said that we couldn't have adsl.
However, after a lot of pleading he fiddled the results and put it down as
59.5dB. The line has been perfect for approx 3 years at 512k - I always
get great contention - lots of 'skint members' where I live so not many
with adsl !!!

Last week I signed up with Demon for adsl max. They were one of the few
companies that would let me order adsl max. I tried to use Fasthosts but
their online system would only let me choose a 512k option. However, on
the BT line check it says that I could possibly get 2.0M but would probably
achieve 1.0M.
I've not yet swapped over so I don't know what the adsl max speed is - but
it will be happening in a few days. Fingers crossed.

It might be a idea to do a line check on the Fasthosts site and BT site for
your number.

The problem you might have with adsl max is that if you get poor
attenuation and SNR during the test period then the line speed will settle
at something much less than 1.0M :o(
Make sure all your house connections are good/clean ie. BT master socket,
extension, filter, router etc... before the test period.

I'll let you know what happens to my line.

Regards

Simon

Subject: [ukha_d] [OT]ish Any ADSL MAx users on long-ish lines

HI, I had an ADSL outage for a week last month - as a result BT downgraded
my line to 512k (caused much shouting) and now refuse to connect it back to
1 meg. I had a successful 1 meg service for the previous 18 months, so even
though my line is borderline (60db attn and SNR of 10db) I am reasonably
sure my line can support 1Mg reliably. Would ADSL max help? Is it possible
for a user to re-try the line grading (even if it causes a temp disruption
to service)? Do I have anything to lose?

Anyone on the list using it with close to 60db line loss. Naturally I am
using the list-standard Vigor2600 as my router.

Frustrated Tim.
