A Windows Server that is dedicated to to a task in my experience is
very reliable. My current Cortex setup runs under Windows 2003 R2
server (only because I work in IT and have a Technet subscription for
licensing). I believe David's setup is running under Windows XP, but
again a dedicated machine. I keep meaning to try a copy of Windows Home
Server that has just been released and is based on a cut-down version
of of Windows Small Business Server.

different devices, installing and uninstalling lots of software, etc.
For a server I turn off all non-essential services, don't install
anything beyond what is necessary, turn off advanced GUI features and
just leave it alone to work.
