I'll second Chris' recommendation for Idratek system. The modules
cover
all aspects of HA sensoring and control. The backup support from the
guys at Idratek is second to none (any queries I have are all answered
within the same day and an lengthy explanation to boot).

The main software, Cortex, gives you a control and data logging
interface, whilst each module can fall back to basic functionallity.
The latter would be useful in the event of a power cut, once restored
the modules would be functional within 2 / 3 seconds. Also covers the
loss of the central PC.

Not sure why Mal is questioning Chris' comments, but I would certainly
recommend having a look at Idratek and making up your own mind.
