Thanks - this is the type of device; but I'd like to avoid the on-cost
of
the extra 'Comfort' bits (the similar ones embedded in 'intelligent'
extension  leads are a bit cheaper  too).

I'm hoping to find the current sensing bit, as an independent module :-(

You could use one of these for the sensing bit, but you would need a
relay or some such to control the load:
