Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, though don't get too hung up on which you want, you
can have both KDE and gnome on the same system) is a good start. It
rates highly in the working-out-of-the-box stakes, as well as having
squillions of applications available in the package manager and an
active community answering newbie questions.

Once you get it installed, the program 'Automatix' will take the work
out of installing all the codecs and things that are notably absent from
the distribution for licensing reasons.

Ubuntu will run as a live CD, so you can have a play before you even
install, but bear in mind that it's artificially slow in this mode.
