if you're buying a modchip, any of the xecuter series is a good bet.
i have xboxen with an xecuter 2.1, 2.3, 2.6 and 3 in them. the 2.6 is
a good basic all rounder, the 3 is way overkill for most people, but
it's good for tweakability.  both are pretty simple to fit, with or
without soldering. unfortunately, the place i used to buy from has
now closed, so someone else might be able to point you to a supplier.
