RE: [OT] Removing unused OS files after installing winXP pro

Are you able to boot from the DVD drive in the docking station?

If you insert the Windows XP disk into the drive at power-up,
does it give you an option to boot from it. Or if you gain access
to the laptop BIOS, is it an option to boot from the drive.

It might be possible that the laptop recognises the drive
due to its connection via the expansion bus connector
and behaves as though it were built-in. If it is a USB type
docking station then this won't apply. XP gives you the option
of install 3rd party drivers for hardware at install time, but this
assumes you can actually boot from the XP disk.

If you try the c:\newinstall approach you may run into
problems as it will recognise that XP already exists on the disk
and may not install correctly, should you then decide to delete
the original XP directory.
