On-screen-display for home video system.? (electronics guys look in)

I see there are many projects out there for creating a custom OSD
using nothing but a PIC and a couple of
other simple chips, although for colour support a SX chip is needed I
believe.

Has any the electronics folk looked into developing one of these systems
before? Or has anyone used a
off-the-shelf solution for this?
