The DLP colour (color?) wheel effect was one reason I went the CRT
route. A=
ll Projectors have issues even CRT. DLP and LCD have a native resolution
as=
they literally use dots of light to build up the picture, like a Plasma / =
TFT / LCD screen... Even a conventional CRT screen has this effect because
=
of a fine gause or filter just behind the screen to ensure the electrons
hi=
t on the Red Green or Blue phosphor on the back of the screen when
required=
. Either way you still end up with a picture made up of many dots.
=20
A CRT projector on the other hand has three screens (projectors) one for
ea=
ch of the primary (?) Colour and therefore the electron beam does not pass
=
through any mesh and gives a 'smoother' or more gradual change (advantage
o=
f analogue over digital). The light mixes on the screen not in your eye
(So=
me people will say it still mixes in the eye but I think it illustrates my
=
point).
=20
The other advantage is that the CRT Projector does not have a native
resolu=
tion, it does have a maximum though ;-) you can send a whole range of
resol=
utions and the PJ will adapt to it... Whether you would chose to watch it
i=
s another matter. My first experience of using my PJ was a direct
(composit=
e) feed from a DVD player. The scanning lines looked terrible, there
looked=
to be more space between the lines than picture between the spaces. A lot =
of people Double, Triple or even Quadruple the signal to get more scan
line=
s and close the gaps.
=20
I have decided to go the Home Theatre PC route. I can connect the VGA
(HD15=
connection) directly to the 5 BNC connections (RGBHV) on the rear of the p=
rojector. I then set the resolution of the video card to achieve the best
p=
icture effectively scaling the content to fit the screen. Just bought an
AM=
D based PC (damaged stock (no really)) and at the moment will rely on the
o=
n-board graphics (nVidea) I am hoping today to play with resolutions to
ach=
ieve best results.
=20
Although the CRT Projector I bought is 10 years old (last month) it is
capa=
ble of projecting HD at 720p and 1080i (will report back on 1080p...) but
t=
hen with a 100" screen you need that sort of definition to stop it
looking =
blocky. You can get LCD / DLP projectors that do HD natively but they were
=
out of my budget (=A33K or =A34K plus)... A new CRT will set you back
=A315=
K but second hand you can get a deal for less than =A31K.
=20
And now for CRTs biggest drawback.... It is over 1 meter long and weighs
al=
most 80Kg !!!!
=20
Just when you thought it sounded like a good idea.

LCDs don't use a colour wheel - only DLPs...
