Classic case has to be IR codes for AV equipment.

I can see the need for limiting the number of buttons actually present on a
handset but there is absolutely no reason not to have codes available for
other functions to enable automation.

EG.

Physical Buttons

POWER - toggles between OFF and ON
INPUT - cycles through the inputs

Additional codes

POWER OFF
POWER ON
INPUT 1
INPUT 1 S
INPUT 1 RGB
INPUT 2
...etc
