RE: UPS Position In Rack / Cabinet

The argument about heat works the other way. The following is an
extract
from an installation guide for a UPS

"For optimum battery life it is recommended that the ambient around
the
UPS should be 20ºC. If the ambient temperature exceeds this
recommendation the batteries will not perform to their design life
expectations.

For example if a 5 year design life battery if subjected to a constant
operating temperature of 30ºC then the batteries design life will
typically reduce by 50%. This reaction to temperature is not linear
(e.g. at 40ºC the battery design life will be reduced to 20%).
Therefore
it is recommended that the UPS system is installed in an environment
where the ambient temperature is controlled and monitored to
20ºC."

Along with the weight issues you'll find me putting UPS's at the bottom
of the rack everytime.

It probably worth considering the actual airflow within the rack, in the
main hot air exhausts from the rear of equipment. You may find it of
benefit to install blanking panel in the front of the rack above any
equipment to ensure you don't get hot air mixing back in.

Cheers

Stuart
