No problem.... the answer to your question is quite often. Most of the
better suppliers know the answers. Those that don't either we don't buy
from
or they sell extremely basic kit. We try to buy all of our purchases from
reputable companies that know their products, keep stock (or can get it
within a day or two), charge consistent prices (at competitive levels) and
offer good support. Nothing new there I'd of thought.

For example, the two companies (one local and one in England) we buy
aerials
and dishes from know pretty much anything we ask of them regarding their
industry which is rigging. In knowing what kit to use in certain areas and
what hardware is required with it. If that is a SMATV system, then they are
able to advise there too.

The same goes with the suppliers of multi-room audio, CCTV kit, alarm
items,
automation hardware, and some consumer electronics, etc...

Of course we buy small things like cable ties and electrical components
from
the likes of CPC but nearly everything else is bought from people that know
what they are selling. That doesn't mean we always go to them for support
but we CAN.

I would disagree that the days of the guy behind the counter knowing how
stuff works is fading. Apart from when you're talking about most consumer
electronics - there's just no margin on most TV's, DVD players, etc these
days for anyway to spend more than 5 mins selling you the item! With the
internet keeping most mainstream items at minimal margin it doesn't pay
most
people to stock and support the product.

Stephen,

I have to ask...

How often you ask for technical support from an electrical wholesaler ?

I would not ask a wholesaler for technical support about a product no
more than I would ask a plumbers merchant about a boiler or an aerial
wholesale outlet about a SMATV system. Yes I do visit all of these types
of places far too frequently at the moment.

I think the days of the guy behind the counter knowing how the stuff he
sells really works are fading fast.
