RE: Telephone over CAT5/Patch panel

John,

First of all, - you don't *have* to use CAT5/BT adapters - you *could* cut
the BT RJ11/RJ12 (never can remember which it is!) off of each phone, and
crimp on an RJ45 plug in it's place... - this is obviously a "no going
back" operation though...

Rather than buy (and pay over the odds for) "proper" CAT5/BT
adapters, you can instead just go to your local "Poundland" and
buy a load of standard telephone extension leads, cut them in half, and
crimp on an RJ45 plug to the bared ends, - this will give you the correct
adapter to use at both the patch panel end, and the outlet end. (this is
what I've done for all my phones, and it works perfectly).

To common a number of outlets together at the patch panel you basically
need to punch the same wire into several sets of terminals on the back of
the patch panel. - you know that to connect a cable to one outlet on the
patchpanel, you will strip back the outer sheath about 2-3cm, and punch
down the inner cores onto the terminals for one of the ports... - to common
several together, merely strip back much more outer insulation, - about
10-15cm say, and punch each core down to multiple ports by using the longer
length you've exposed... - obviously you punch each core to the same
terminal on each port.

See a picture of mine here for an example...

Subject: [ukha_d] Telephone over CAT5/Patch panel

Probably a dumb question here but I don't seem to get my head around it.

I have flood wire my house with (probably^h^h^h^h^h^h^h not enough)
CAT5. I know that if I want to connect a phone I need a CAT5/BT adaptor.
My question is at the patch panel end. If I want to connect my BT master
socket to a single CAT5 outlet this is just a simple cable connection,
however how do I cable it up so that I can connect the phone line to
multiple CAT5 outlets?

JB
