I guess it depends on how much room you've got under the stairs and
how
deep the kit you want to rack mount is...

Even a wall mounted rack will help tidy things up and most are deep
enough to take switches and other kit.

Problem tends to come when you want to mount servers - some of the rack
mount ITX cases are shallow enough, and SuperMicro do a chassis that's
only 14" deep (http://tinyurl.com/q9ht4)
