Nothing so complicated in the end - just me having one of those 'How
could I be so stupid' moments :)

The supplied RJ11 to RJ11 cable is a typical modem cable where the 2
pairs cross over, extend it one time with the same type of cable and
it becomes a straight through cable - Once i'd picked this up mith
my trusty LAN tester I just added another short cable to make it a
cross over again. If I'd had any RJ11 bodies lying around I'd have
just crimped a new plug onto it.
