Yeup, probably the only answer!

Do you really need 4 zones per card?  Clearly, you can easily get six
from 2 cards.  What slowed me down was the expensive bit of a decent
multichannel power amp. 12 channel amps are not cheap and I've not
seen a 16 channel one!

In any case, good luck and I've been very happy with my Xlobby setup.
I've even managed limited integration with the rest of the HA setup
with Xap.
