Thanks for all the feedback, and keep it coming ... it's really useful :-)
If you can only get 3 stereo zones from a 7.1 card then maybe I'll
look for a 5.1 card instead - no point paying for the extra unused
ones :-/
I wonder if for the side zones the plug is actually a 4-pole one like
you get with video cameras - these take L & R audio plus composite
video down one cable but look just like a regular 3.5mm jack plug
(e.g. http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=AV06942&N=0
- count the rings).
