VHS (and S-VHS) is a term used to describe a video tape
recording system not
a type of video signal.

The signal output by an S-VHS recorder is not S-VHS but
"S-Video" or more
correctly "Y/C" video in which the Luminance (Y) and Chrominance
(C) signals
are separate giving better resolution than a Composite Video
signal.

The acronym "VHS" being defined as "Video Home System"
is
actually a
modification of its original meaning which was "Vertical Helical
Scan" which
describes how the tape travels across the recording heads.

DVD is another acronym that had its definition changed from
Digital Video
Disc to Digital Versatile Disc.
