As I personally don't watch more than a couple of DVDs a week - and I find
my 10 Terabyte storage system (which generates no heat, no noise and cost
£300 BTW) perfectly adequate (aka a pine bookcase holding all the dvds -
with me popping the one I want in the drive) perhaps I am not ideally
positioned to comment, but it occurs to me that if 2 individuals both have
the original DVD, then there is no copyright issue with sharing the ISO -
rather than each individual rip the same core of movies it might be
possible
for like-minded individuals to share some of their data. I imagine it
would
go something like this -

Email traffic to establish common DVD ground
Copy list generated
Arrival of recipient at donor's gaff
Plug in TB Firewire enclosure
Initiate copy
Go to pub (recipient paying)
Go out for dinner (recipient paying)
Bed
Breakfast - Donor's contribution
Non-specific HA/Tech nerding
Disconnect TB Firewire enclosure with approx 0.5TB DVDs
Byebye.

Reciprocation would always remain a possibility.

Just a suggestion

Tim
