If you want the best trade off for size vs quality, you could do a lot
worse
than "AutoGK" or "Auto Gordian Knot" - it's a wrapper
around the various
tools required to encode a DVD down to Divx/Xvid.
I encode regular movies (ie, general viewing rather than
"showcase" movies)
down to about 800Mb in size, and that's spot on - for anything over 2
Hours,
or where it's a really good looking move and I want to keep it "just
so", I
go to 1Gb instead.
To be honest, I struggle most times to tell the difference - we have tried
blind trials on the projector (nothing too formal, but interesting
nonetheless) and couldn't tell the difference.
Encoding movies used to be something of a chore, and the results whilst
being "ok" really were not that great... Using tools like AutoGK,
you can
get the freedom of use back that you want.
