It's good, but not all roses in the garden - it's worth remembering that
XBMC is a homebrew development, and as such, doesn't perform 100% all of
the
time.

For instance, the build I installed this week doesn't handle .wmv videos
properly, whereas the previous version was fine - but the previous version
froze on DVD layer changes, the one before that couldn't handle ISO images
properly, and the one before that... And so on and so on.

I have a very understanding wife, but we still have the discussion every
time xbmc does one of it's "weirds" that an actual DVD player is
only thirty
quid, and the hassle of XBMC isn't worth it.

what is
recommended?

It's a little involved - if you ever intend using your Xbox on Live you
should get a chip: the soft mod is one way and can't be switched off.

No, the project mayhem skin is rather slick, but the menus are not as nice
as MCE.
