I'm using both XBox with XBMC and the Hauppauge MediaMVP with MVPMC.
The
backend is a MythTV system (Linux) with a couple of freeview cards. One of
the MediaMVP is 11g WiFi connected.

Both can play music and internet radio, and show live and recorded TV
through MythTV. The MVPMC is not good with MPEG4 but the XBMC works fine.
The XBMC is much better at picture gallery. The MVPMC boxes are much
smaller and start playing recorded TV much faster. The XBOX has a SP/DFIF
optical out cable available, there is a hardware mod for available for
MediaMVP for coax or optical SP/DIF. XBMC can have a big disk added for
local media. XBox can output HDTV with the right cable - only really useful
for picture gallery or games. XBox has a DVD drive. Picture quality from
either is excellent, provided the source material is good.

XBMC - sitting room with 25" widescreen LCD TV (component video 720i)
XBMC - my son's in his room - big disk but networked to my MythTV
MVPMC - bedroom 15" 4:3
MVPMC - office/computer room 32" widescreen TV and good amp and
speakers
and a sofa.

It took some time to get the system together, and the only problems I have
now are the occasional filling up of the disk causes problems - moral keep
an eye on it - especially if you set up to record all occurrences of a
particular show. Sometimes it doesn't spot that two are the same episode
and records both - that's down to the Radio Times EPG.
