I'm now on my second Terastation.
They are great.
I already tried two other storage solutions.
(1) I built a PC to act as a server with 1TB of storage.
This worked fine, however is way overboard just to store data these=20=20
days.
It makes lots of noise, heat etc.
It consumes a lot of power.
(2) I built up another 1TB using the NSLU-2 adapters that allow=20=20
standard external USB drives to be connected direct to your=20=20
network. This has worked out fine, but it is quite messy.
The three NSLU-2 units, plus six external drives.
Nine power supplies!
I put these in a rack in the garage.

I must say that they have been extremely stable.
The only downtime I had was when my trusty eBuyer UPS blew-up.
The Terastation looks an expensive option when compared to these=20=20
first two options, however in the last year other things became more=20=20
important to me.
(1) Networked storage needs to be available 24/7. but I don't want=20=20
the noise and fire risk of PC's left on all the time.
(2) Power costs
(3) Space
(4) I tried the mac-mini, got hooked and am now on a mission to rid=20=20
the house of my Windows boxes.
The first 1TB Terastation I bought was over =A3600 last summer.
The second one I bought last week has come down to =A3493.50 inc. Vat

The Terastation has a Gigabit ethernet connection, various RAID=20=20
options and a great browser-based setup utility.
It also supports all OS's, inc MAC OSX
You don't need to load any software on the client machines (unlike=20=20
the Windows-only Netgear SC101).
Terastation also has four USB ports that support external USB Hard=20=20
Disks, so is upgradable later.
One of the USB ports may also act as a print-server so that you can=20=20
connect your printer effectively to the network, without needing=20=20
another server machine.
Oh well, that's my 2p worth,
Cheers,
Mark
