Central heating pump monitoring

I'm looking for ideas.

As part of my house monitoring system I want to include the various
pumps that are attached to my central heating and hot water system.
There are five in total. All I need to know is when the pump is running
but I cannot work our a simple solution. The best I can come up with at
present it putting a water meter with a pulse output on each pumped loop
and connecting to my 1-wire system. However this will be expensive,
messy and has the potential of reducing water flow.
