simple solution fro home heating monitoring/control?

I've seen the ongoing thread about replacing the usual heating/how
water controllers with relays etc....is there anyone doing basically
the equivalent of the usual Drayton/Danfoss/whatever controllers with
a serial interface that fits to the usual "British Gas-type"
wallplate
mounting?

Heating control isn't really a big concern of mine (not at moment
anyway) but it wolud be nice to be able to monitor when heating is
turned on/off and also possibly to overrride timer occasionally.
