Re: HA Holy Grail #1: Occupancy Detection

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.

Although the original thread has become disconnected, my shower
"problem" is
very minor and really a throwaway comment related to PIRs not seeing
through
glass and hence unexpected effects on presence algorithms. To recap,
occasionally I lose bathroom presence if I spend too long in the shower
because no motion is being detected on the main sensor and room presence
times out. Probably my sensor positioning could have been better, although
I'd have to double check the zones and the sensor "footprint".
But I believe
extending the timeout period based on a shower-on detection (either by my
current humidity method or hot pipe temp change) would be sufficient, and
then the normal timeout could be reset on subsequent bathroom presence loss
(since there is always going to be a re-establishment of presence when you
come out of the shower). I really ought to experiment with this.

I have to say that I hate anything battery powered with a vengence, going
mad trying to find which particular smoke alarm beeps once every five
minutes due to a low battery (what complete plank came up with 5 minutes ?)
means that I have vowed that I willl *never* install something relying on
battery power again :-)

However, I was _briefly_ teased by the idea of a toilet seat sensor ....

Cheers,

David
