Hi Paul

"managed" usually gives you a few things, possibly including any
or all
of:

Traffic shaping
QOS management
VLAN capability
Access control
And, (obviously?!) - Remote management, usually either SNMP or RMON

Many such switches will have an embedded webserver interface so you can
configure them via a browser. Lesser ones (probably only really old
ones) might only have a "console" serial port for configuration
with a
terminal emulator.
