You can use an Xbox as a media extender.  You need the Media Center
Extender pack, which includes a CD/DVD to boot the Xbox, and a MCE
remote.  Sadly, I can't seem to find any.  I think they've been
discontinued, and they were never available in the UK anyway.  Any
pointers to where to get one would be gratefully received, as I have an
Xbox, and no real desire to do gaming in my spare time.
