That just about sums it up for me - my experience is that if you build it
using fully compliant (or well tested) components and leave it alone, it
doesn't break. But if you use the HTPC as a desktop, add programs, remove
programs, have applications break, etc.. you will end up with a very
unstable machine.
The key for me is that he's bought a Humax box, but clearly isn't treating
it in the same way - would he consider upgrading the hard drive, or
changin=

the firmware, swapping the case, etc...? If so, I bet it would also break.
