From experience in doing exactly this.

Vodafone and O2 handsets are generally unlocked.  (In my experience)

Orange handsets are always locked and usually run custom Orange phone
software so they can have some features turned off.  T-mobile phones are
usually locked as well.

My new Virgin Sony Ericsson k750i was also supplied unlocked.  (Don't
know if this applies to Virgin phones with branding on them)

Nokia phones can sometimes be unlocked for free try here for links.
