RE: Re: Domestic wind turbine

The numbers in the beeb article are wildly inaccurate - either that or he
has chosen the most inefficient wind turbine on the planet.

A typical 3 blade turbine about that size, which are also quieter than the
=
5
blade version he has, should be generating about 350W. That's a planning
figure from Rutland who make a lot of the smaller turbines for off-grid
homes, bothies outhouses etc.

I make that 3,066Kwh per year, not 600, so he's saving =A3220 a year, not =
=A342.
It's also worth noting that these turbines cost about =A31200 + VAT, which
=
is
*before* any clear skies style grant comes into play.

With the right turbine he'd be looking at payback in about 6 years without
grant assistance, about 4 years with.=20

The turbine will have a 30 year lifespan (if it's similar to the Rutland
ones I have seen), so he'd also be looking at a good twenty years of
"free"
power generation from it.

That and, of course, he won't be affected so much by the constant rise of
leccy prices in the face of reducing oil supplies.

I wouldn't do it as a retrofit, but at this point - I don=92t think I would
consider a self build without a combined solar/wind system.

Automation has great potential for energy management as well as cool

That sounds about right, so on those figures, 600kWh per year is gonna save
him =A342 a year, its going to take him 47 years to get his =A32000 back
assuming that he has no maintenance costs in the meantime!

Am I thinking this the right way? I think its a great idea, I'd love one
bu=
t
it would have to make financial sense!
