I had considered putting the thermostat on a relay-controlled circuit.
The house would always be protected via a frost stat, but the thermostat
could be switched in and out as required e.g. close the relay to bring
the thermostat in to control house temp and hence cause boiler to fire
and warm up the house.

Not nearly as slick as using 1-wire etc, but functional.
