Gareth

It depends what you want, I have done a couple of jobs recently with a wall
recessed light which has an asymmetric back so it throws the light across
the step. They are very nice, very expensive and a real b****** to fit as
they have an integral transformer which has to be recessed into the wall.
These actually light the steps.

Another option would be tread lights where the lights are actually in an
aluminium channel along the front of the step, These are used a lot in
hotels, restaurant and so on and have a fairly commercial/industrial look.
I
think they use xenon lights.

For a home feature you might like to think about the micromark led
fittings,
they have them in a range of sizes from about the size of a euro coin on up
and in either round or an eye shape (I didn't see any square/rectangular
but
they may well do those as well). Off the top of my head you could run about
18 of the smaller fittings off a single transformer. The smaller ones are
really just for effect as they don't really through enough light to be of
much use. I was on holiday in Portugal recently and in a restaurant they
had
the smallest ones embedded in a dark glossy stone floor. Very effective but
not sure about maintenance.

Chaps

We planning on doing some major re-decorating for our hall down and up,
and all the way up the stairs. And I'm thinking that some stair lighting
might be funky. Has nayone got any galleries of pictures of design ideas
for this ?

Im thinking of a pressure mat on the first and last steps so comfort can
kick them on (ie mebe some led lighting?)

Open for ideas....
