720 lines is also at a technical level where the costs of producing a
large enough display for a typical living room aren't prohibitive ...
remember that eventually peoples grannies will be expected to be shelling
out on hi-def kit when standard definition stuff is old hat and no longer
available.
The standards are there to give everyone a bite at the cherry ... not just
those of us that like to be at the bleeding edge of consumer spending.
