Not entirely I think. I can sort of see [some of] Phil's point.

For a given bandwidth, a 1080i bitstream is going to have a more
encoding artefacts with a fast moving images compared to 720p.

In fact I read something just the other day that suggested that 720p is
better for stuff like sport, but for content with lots of static shots
(eg some documentaries), there is a benefit to the higher resolution of
1080i.

Of course if you don't have a "proper" ( ;-) ) HD screen capable
of
showing 1080i natively, the extra detail would be wasted...

What would be nice is if they could set aside more bandwidth for quality
1080i programming, and squeeze the footy 'til it looks like Pong on a
green screen... ;-)

Incidentally, the HD standard does allow for 1080p at 25/30 frames per
second. I have no idea if the 1920x1080 native resolution displays that
are currently available can display it though...
