IME, yes.
I got an old PII 233Mhz, put in a 5 quid 2-port IDE card from eBay, 3x
160GB drives, and was up and running with a software raid 5 Linux server
very quickly. The OS was on some raid 1 partitions and all the data across
three big raid 5 partitions. You could disconnect any drive and the machine
would still work/boot quite happily.
