BitTorrent splits files into lots of pieces - so you can share the pieces
you have, even
if you don't have them all.

You don't do anything when the download is complete except leave it
running. The whole
time you're downloading, you're also uploading. In fact, if you limit the
upload too much,
others won't let you download. It works in a tit-for-tat type way.

I use Azureus.
