RE: [OT] Hard Disk Dying
The Maxtor 120Gb that lived in my TiVo recently died, I checked Maxtor
online about the warranty and it asked me to enter the serial number, it
then told me it had warranty left and produced an address label for me.
I returned it to Ireland and they sent me a replacement a week later.
Not bad for a four year old disk which has been in use 24x7 in a hard
working TiVo.

I had an IBM die a while back under warranty (about two years old). Sent
it back to holland and received a reconditioned replacement in return
with
about 30 days warranty. This unit expired after about 40 days!! My
policy
these days - if it fails then bin it. Warranty is more of an expectation
of disk life than a guarantee of a reliable replacement should the worst
happen. The only replacement worth having is a new unit in my humble
experience
