My background is in Unix/Linux Consultancy, Architecture and
Implementations.

I'd recommend SuSE 9.2 for your "average" user - Its got quite
good
gui's etc for doing just about everything you'd need to do.

I'm not a great SuSE fan (as it's wrapped in too many gui's and too many
thing have been SuSE'ified) but it good at what it does.
