Thanks for the suggestions, Dan.  I tried to reply offlist, but it bounced
(mail box full)

I just installed a freeware app called "Real7time Converter" - it
connected
to the Radio 4 stream, and wrote it straight out as an MP3 - perfect!!
Perfect that is until I played it - it can't handle 22050kHz sample rate of
the Radio 4 stream, so the MP3 sounds like a bunch of Smurfs.  Bugger!
Fixing it is in the author's "to do" list in his FAQ, but the
program hasn't
been updated for two years, so that's that :-(

I'll give your suggestions a try next.
